During May we have an informal retrospective collection of his work in the Gallery at Snape Maltings. James Allen was born in Framlingham, Suffolk and is the youngest son of one of the town’s butchers. From an early age, he had a keen interest in sketching both landscape and wild life. He joined the Army and served with the East Anglian Regimental Band and it was during this time that he started to study oil painting. On leaving the Army he settled in Norwich and in 1977 he decided to go it alone as a professional artist concentrating on local landscapes, wild life and more recently still life. His work has been exhibited throughout East Anglia and also in London and has been chosen for display by the Royal Academy and the Royal Miniature Society. Suffolk artist Tessa Newcomb's work is collected far and wide, but it is the places close to home which inspire her most. Her exhibition in June at the Snape Maltings Gallery is a celebration of the reed beds, river views and allotments just a stone's throw from the Maltings Artist Tessa Newcomb feels that the reed beds at Snape have a life of their own. Even in that isolated area, there's always something going on amidst the whispering of the river and the rushes. Her current exhibition at Snape Malting Gallery homes in on these tiny incidents in the stillness - flashes of colour on the murky marsh ponds, bird life seen from a river boat trip, and walkers crossing paths. "Rushes seem to epitomise Snape as beach huts do Southwold. Out there we can see the lovely light flatten their leaves, until their heads turn gold and turn the stagnant pools a deep purply brown," she explains. "Out there, it's the wind in the rushes and the sturdy presence of walkers trundling along their paths, their heads appearing to float above the reed bed. Many people visiting the Maltings Gallery will have come in from the marshes, and those who haunt the gallery should go out there to fully experience this place." Tessa has been working on the paintings since the freezing early days of this year. Now that the sun's out, the finished works reflect the sense of place at Snape in all seasons – from the 16-part centrepiece inspired by local allotments to the isolated winter walkers in the rushes. Her work invites viewers to put themselves in the frame. From her first drawings - which she makes in situ - to the completed work on a board, it's easy to imagine yourself at the centre of the painting. "As I drew, my shadow lengthened and became entwined in the reed beds, but then when I paint it, it will become your shadow," she explains. The timing of the exhibition to coincide with the world-famous Aldeburgh Festival chimes with Tessa's love of music. She also loves words and is inspired by poetry – from John Clare to Kevin Crossley-Holland – which reflects the natural world. As an artist she is constantly working, and loves to have projects on the go. As well as her recent Suffolk triptych in Letheringham Church (a must-see if you are in the area!), she is also putting together more books - one inspired by the Walled Garden at Glemham, and a book on allotments which will be published in March 2012. "I love painting. And I get worried when I'm not working," she says. Tessa Newcomb's exhibition at the Snape Maltings Gallery runs from 28 May – 30 June and crosses over with the Aldeburgh Festival at the Concert Hall.
