James Allen Watercolours
James Allen is one of Suffolk’s most prolific and collected water colour artists. During May we have an informal retrospective collection of his work in the Gallery at Snape Maltings.

James Allen was born in Framlingham, Suffolk and is the youngest son of one of the town’s butchers. From an early age, he had a keen interest in sketching both landscape and wild life.
He joined the Army and served with the East Anglian Regimental Band and it was during this time that he started to study oil painting. On leaving the Army he settled in Norwich and in 1977 he decided to go it alone as a professional artist concentrating on local landscapes, wild life and more recently still life.
His work has been exhibited throughout East Anglia and also in London and has been chosen for display by the Royal Academy and the Royal Miniature Society. Many of his pictures are in collections in the UK and abroad.
So why not come along to the Gallery and enjoy recognising some of your favourite Suffolk scenes and places interpreted by James Allen?
Sally Anne Fitter
Strong composition and imaginative colours are a hallmark of Norfolk-based Sally Anne’s still lives.

Sally Anne Fitter will be exhibiting here in the Gallery at Snape Maltings from Saturday 2 June to Thursday 5 July . Sally Anne delights in painting still life with familiar objects, framed within windows and interiors, and her landscape paintings are both creative and imaginative. We are delighted to have her work here in profusion as we head into summer.
We love the strong colours and numerous painting techniques she uses, combined with a strong sense of design and composition that invites the viewer to look again at the ordinary and familiar. She has an imaginative eye for colour, with a warm, rich colour palette that adds a vivid and recognisable feel to her paintings.
After moving to Norfolk, Sally Anne paints full time, and regularly exhibits in galleries, around the country.
She will be here in the Gallery to celebrate the launch of her exhibition with drinks between 12 and 3pm on Saturday 2 June. Please do come and join us – no invitation is required.
Emily Rae Manning
Launching Snape Maltings’ own brand with local artist Emily Rae Manning

Emily Rae Manning is a talented young Suffolk-based artist and printmaker. As you can see from her work above, her style is simple but detailed, with a clean graphic feel that reflects the spirit of place here at Snape Maltings.
Over the past few months, we have been developing a unique range of Snape Maltings products using Emily’s designs, featuring reeds, avocets, and barley amongst the many images that she has developed uniquely for us. The mugs and notelets are now in stock, and look out for textiles, delicious chocolate, and many more exciting developments on our own brand lines using Emily Rae Manning’s designs.
To launch the new ranges, a collection of Emily’s original work will be featured in the stairwell of the Granary block here at Snape Maltings, and prints and signs like the one above will be available to purchase from the Gallery.
Exhibition runs in the stairwell of Granary block from 2 June – 20 July.

This wonderful print workshop for beginners offers the opportunity to understand printing from both the surface and the line of a printing plate. The workshop will include both Relief and Intaglio Printmaking.
Relief Printmaking – Lino
Work from the surface and develop relief printmaking skills to create bold and colourful prints through Lino. This morning session offers a range of simple but effective techniques that produce a variety of different images from the same block.
Intaglio Printmaking – Dry Point
An immediate and sensitive intaglio process giving you the ability to create intricate and detailed images through a rich characterful line. This afternoon session works with flexible acetate giving you many opportunities to experiment with the technique.
To maximise the effectiveness of your time with us you may also like to bring some images that would inspire your printmaking (approximately A5 in size). Simple images with bold lines for Lino, more detail can be included for Dry Point & it will be possible to ‘trace’ Dry Point images.
