About Snape Maltings

Johnny and Alesha Gooderham

It is so easy to be ensconced in Snape Maltings; sitting in its tranquil spot on the River Alde, so close to the sea and with wonderful wildife and walks and the unique collection of shops and galleries which create this very special place.

For over 40 years our family has carefully and considerately evolved the shops at the Maltings to ensure that our products fulfill a function but also have a definite style and beauty, which constantly provides inspiration.

At full industrial use Snape Maltings grew to some seven acres of buildings and was one of the largest flat floor maltings in the country. In 1965, after 120 years, the malting of barley ceased – the direct result of inefficiencies of a large complex. In 1965, George Gooderham bought the Maltings and a new era began with the gradual conversion of the Victorian buildings.

The first major development was the now world-class Concert Hall. This move towards visitors to the Maltings inspired the retail concept by the Gooderham family. The Craft Shop opened in 1971 bringing together a variety of locally made art and crafts. Over the 40 years Snape Maltings has developed a range of offerings, and revitalised the old granaries into a leading destination on the Suffolk Heritage Coast.

Snape Maltings continues to be a family run business employing over 70 people. Alongside the shops and concert hall you can find residential properties designed by award-winning architects Haworth Tompkins, and unique holiday apartments available to rent.

Recently, there have been a growing number of requests for us to produce a mail order and on-line offer so everyone can have the ‘Snape style’ all year round, which has delighted us. We are therefore happy to have recently opened our online store (you can see the link at the top of each page) or you can request a mail order brochure using the link at the bottom of the page.

Thank you for visiting our web site - and we hope to see you in Snape soon!
